One of the richest women in the world and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott, wed Seattle-based science teacher Dan Jewett in 2021.
After 25 years of marriage, she and CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos announced their separation in 2019. Two years later, they got married.
In a statement published to their profiles on the Giving Pledge, a movement that encourages wealthy people to donate the majority of their wealth to charity, Scott and Jewett announced their marriage.
At the time, Jewett wrote, “And now, by a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most charitable and kind people I know—and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others.”
Scott, however, filed for divorce in 2022, a year after the couple got married.

He’s a longstanding science teacher
As Jewett indicated on his Giving Pledge page, he has been a teacher “for the most” of his life, and most recently taught physics at a private school in Seattle, according to the WSJ.
Scott’s children take classes at the school, and that’s where the couple met, according to the Washington Post. The children have been students there since at least 2019, as a Herald Business Journal article published at the time of Scott and Bezos’ divorce said the couple were often spotted on campus with their kids.
Before joining the school, Jewett served as a science teacher at The Bush School in Seattle from 2011 to 2016, according to a post by Head of School Percy Abram.
Josh Verlin, a sportswriter from Philadelphia, told PEOPLE that Jewett was his AP chemistry instructor at Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, from 2006 to 2007.
“He was involved, energetic, passionate, friendly, gregarious in a really earnest way,” says Verlin, 32. “He so plainly liked what he was doing, loved teaching and loved science, and enjoyed interacting with the youngsters … You wished you were enrolled in his class because he was so interesting.”
Jewett’s current employment status as a teacher is unknown as of 2021 because his name was removed from the staff directory.

After getting married, Jewett and Scott stayed in Seattle. She modified her author bio on Amazon shortly after getting married to say that she and her husband, Dan, reside in Seattle with their four children.

He hugs you Scott’s charitable work
Scott revealed that she and Jewett had donated $2,739,000,000 to 286 high-impact organisations as of June 2021.
At the time of her marriage to Jewett in 2021, Scott was listed as the 22nd richest person in the world on Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index, retaining a four percent share in Amazon after her breakup with Bezos.
Scott is a committed philanthropist with a $53.5 billion net worth; in December 2020, she revealed that she had given approximately $4.2 billion to 384 organisations during the preceding four months.
Jewett pledged to join Scott “in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial riches to benefit others” when he submitted his name to Scott’s Giving Pledge page.

I have never intended to accumulate the kind of riches necessary to feel that stating such a thing would have particular meaning, so it is weird for me to be writing a letter indicating I expect to give away the majority of my wealth throughout my lifetime, Jewett said. “For the most of my life, I have been both a teacher and a grateful student of the kindness of those around me. This has required me to do my best to emulate them by giving when I have had resources to give, including time, energy, and monetary goods.”
Scott, according to Jewett, is the “kindest and most caring person” he knows, and he expressed his excitement for the opportunity to “do so much good” by sharing and donating his possessions.
Jewett’s charitable endeavours are not a surprise to Verlin.
I read his statement and I could hear him saying it, if who he was as a teacher is who he is as a person, he said. He seems like the kind of person who may say, “Let me assist you give away [your billions] in a smart way,” in my opinion.
He has Bezos’ backing.
Bezos expressed to the WSJ his undying love for Scott and Jewett.
Dan is such a lovely guy, and Bezos expressed his happiness and excitement for the couple.
Bezos, who is dating television host and actress Lauren Sanchez, left his position as CEO of Amazon in July 2021.
He doesn’t use social media.
Since their divorce, Scott’s ex-husband Bezos has received a lot of media attention, but her current husband, Jewett, avoids the spotlight. His only message on Instagram is a warning against scams involving his charitable endeavours.
The 2021 post stated that “no one representing me or my giving will ever ask anyone to pay a fee or submit personal information.”
In September 2022, Scott filed for divorce from him.
Just one year after marrying Jewett, Scott petitioned for divorce on September 26, 2022. The ex-spouses used a separation contract, in which they agree on the terms of the separation, including what will happen to the marital property, even though court documents didn’t mention a prenup.
In response to PEOPLE’s request for comment on the breakup, Jewett did not immediately respond.
