Vicky White, the facility’s assistant director of prisons, was holding Casey White when he escaped from an Alabama jail in handcuffs in April, sparking a massive manhunt for the two. Vicky White, 56, informed her coworkers on the day of the escape that she was taking the prisoner to a mental health evaluation, but officials later discovered that no such appointment had been made.

In Indiana, where Casey White was apprehended, the two were eventually located. According to the authorities, Vicky White shot herself in the head.

According to Alabama law, someone can be charged with murder if they “cause the death of any person” while doing other crimes like escapology or if they “recklessly engage in conduct which presents a grave risk of death to a person.”

Friends and coworkers had expressed confusion over Vicky White’s association with the prisoner who was already serving a 75-year sentence for attempted murder and other offences. Vicky White had worked for the sheriff’s office for 16 years.
